Medical Dosimetry

A Medical Dosimetrist is actively engaged in radiation therapy treatment planning, dose calculation, and physician consultation. A dosimetrist needs to be an excellent problem solver who can think critically about a multi-faceted plan that delivers maximum dose to the tumor while sparing healthy tissue from the potentially lethal effects of radiation. The dosimetrist works very closely with radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiation therapists to provide patients with the best treatment possible.

According to the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD), a Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) can pursue a career in the following areas:

  • Clinical Service and Consultation
  • Research
  • Academic and/or Clinical Instruction
  • Locum Tenens
  • Vendor Applications/ Technical Support
  • Administration

Radiological Technologies University offers three program paths into the world of Medical Dosimetry: AS to BS in Medical Dosimetry, a 60credit hour, two year program; AS to MS in Medical Dosimetry, a three year, 70 credit hour program; and an MS in Medical Dosimetry, two years, 47 credit hours.

Mission Statement

The program will prepare clinically competent, patient focused, entry-level medical dosimetrists who are able to make a positive contribution to the healthcare community.

Goal: Students will be clinically prepared and competent.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will create multiple treatment plans in both simulated and actual clinical settings.
  • Students will take an active role in their clinical rotation.

Goal: Students will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will discuss and evaluate various case studies related to the field.
  • Students will practice quality assurance by detecting and correcting plan errors.

Goal: Students will demonstrate communication skills.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will engage in oral presentations.
  • Students will demonstrate clear and concise written communication skills.

Goal: Students will be team oriented and exemplify professional behavior.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to work and communicate in a group setting.
  • Students will model professional and courteous behavior with faculty, staff, and peers.

Goal: Students will demonstrate professional planning practices

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of common toxicities by body site.
  • Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the effects of radiation on the human body.
  • Students will evaluate plan parameters to ensure optimal patient care.

Radiological Technologies University’s MS Medical Dosimetry and BS Medical Dosimetry programs have been awarded an initial accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) of 2 years.
